The Story...
The boat split in two immediately after the Reaper torpedo hit and the expanding air inside the Black Ocean ship dispersed explosively. The shock wave reached the POTAS, and Gavelin Clark was pressed hard into the seat shell.
"Food for the crabs," Gavelin muttered, wiping the sweat from his forehead. The attack from the Black Ocean boat came violently after Gavelin refused to accept the price of EVA. He urgently needed a new dose to replenish the critical level in his blood.
"30,000 Descent Credits for four weeks of EVA was beyond extortionate; it was murder." But the Black Ocean Dealer probably wasn't interested in business at all; he wanted the POTAS's cargo and the money.
"Christie! Prepare for salvage. I don't want to lose this stuff." The onboard computer adjusted the POTAS's vector to the wreckage of the black market ship and launched the salvage drone in the rear of the ship.
"Drone en route, Captain." Christie confirmed, handing control over to Gavelin. As the wreckage of the boat sank faster into the depths, the drone shot into the darkness, following the swarm of rising air bubbles to the wreckage of the ship.
"There's the cargo hold," thought Gavelin, and steered the drone into the ship's shattered opening.
The pressure-equalizing drug EVA is extracted from the pineal gland of the red deep-sea worm. An infinitely small amount of the molecule in each worm protected the animals' cells from pressure and hot gases from the black smokers where they settled. When humans colonized the seabed shortly before the onset of the great catastrophe, they were defenseless against the limits of physics. The first habitats therefore emerged no deeper than 100 meters below the sea surface.
Only after the discovery of Environment Vector Acid (EVA) in the worm's brain-like cell tissue did humanity realize that the drug also made human cells insensitive to pressure, preventing the inert gases from becoming a deadly threat to the body. EVA had only one drawback: it degrades in the body, and its protective effect disappears after 10 days at the most. Thus, EVA began to become essential for human life.
Criminals like the Black Ocean Connection don't have the opportunity to regularly dock with civilian habitats. They must ensure EVA supplies across the vast ocean and usually carry large quantities of EVA, which they usually store near their cockpit or on their bodies.
The drone made its way through the debris into the front of the bandit ship. The cockpit hatch was open, but the pilot hadn't managed to get out in time. Still strapped in, he sat in his seat, a silent witness to the incident, wide-eyed and staring into the darkness. Gavelin immediately recognized the large leg pouch and severed it from the pilot with a small circular saw. "I'm curious to see how well-endowed you are," Gavelin Clark said to himself, alone in his ship, and quickly piloted the drone out of the wreckage and back to the POTAS.
